In the world trade, Indonesia is one of the largest coffee producers since centuries ago. Some examples of Indonesian specialty coffee are Java coffee, Mandheling coffee, Gayo coffee, Toraja coffee, Kintamani Bali coffee, and Flores Bajawa coffee.
East Java is one of the central coffee plantations that spread vast expanse ranging from the West to the East. Among the famous East Java coffee products is arabica coffee which is partly (60%) produced in Ijen-Raung mountain area. Arabica coffee from Ijen-Raung mountains has been known in the world market with a distinctive flavor. Distinctiveness of coffee flavor of Ijen-Raung’s arabica coffee is influenced by geographical conditions of Ijen-Raung mountains whose products are known in the International market under the name “arabica Java-Ijen Raung coffee”.
This coffee product has been legally protected by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia, and is the only first specialty coffee product from East Java that is protected by Geographical Indication (GI). Arabica Java-Ijen Raung coffee production is located in the area 07o 56.130’ S (latitude)-08o 01.527’ S (latitude) and longitude between 114o 02, 121’ E (longitude)-114o 09.335’ E (longitude). Ijen Raung mountain position has unique geographical character located in three disctrics, namely Bondowoso, Situbondo, and Banyuwangi. The specific geographical condition of Ijen-Raung causes the flavor of arabica coffee grown in the region to have a distinctive flavor. Uniqueness of the flavor is due to the interaction between coffee plants with environmental conditions Ijen-Raung region. Certification of geographical indication of Ijen-Raung arabica coffee due to specification of geographical condition and farmer behavior in arabica coffee plant management in the area. Legal protection is given to Ijen-Raung arabica coffee products because the coffee products produced have distinctive characteristics quality that are not the same as coffee products from other regions anywhere. In the presence of this geographical indication then arabica coffee products Ijen-Raung will be protected from piracy by other parties.

Production of arabica Ijen-Raung coffee

The area of coffee land in the district of Bondowoso, East Java reaches 12,500 hectares consisting of 7,000 hectares of arabica coffee and 5,500 hectares of robusta coffee field. In the district of Bondowoso, arabica coffee planting area is spread in the sub-distric of Sumber wringin, Sempol, Botolinggo, and Cerme, while in the district Situbondo located in the sub-district Arjasa. The productivity of arabica coffee Java Ijen-Raung is reported to be 500-750 kg/hectare with the production potential in this area of 2,000 tons/hectare/year. Cultivation system applied by the farmers who are members of “Perhimpunan Masyarakat Perlindungan Indikasi Geografis (PMPIG)” (The Association of Community of Geographical Indication Protection) Ijen-Raung more emphasize the system of organic cultivation. Fertilization using the type of organic fertilizer by utilizing litters of plants/weeds and livestock manure which is applied twice a year. Naturally, also supported by the fertile soil conditions that support the growth of coffee plants well. Pest and disease control is performed using an integrated control system by utilizing natural enemies and biological agents. The applied crop shape is a single rod at a height of about 180 cm. Subsequent maintenance cuttings are also done routinely such as crop-off harvest, coarse “wiwil”, and fine “wiwil”. One of the unique things from the Ijen-Raung arabica coffee cultivation system is the use of shade plants that utilize the natural shade of forest plant crop.

Arabica Java-Ijen Raung coffee flavor

In order to get a distinctive flavor, arabica Ijen-Raung coffee processing is done with a wet processing system, fermented for 12-36 hours and then drying naturally under the sun. The processed coffee beans come from at least 95% red cherry coffee. Java-Ijen Raung arabica coffee beans traded are classified under Quality I (Grade 1) in accordance with “Standar Nasional Indonesia” (SNI) (Indonesian National Standard) number 01-2907-2008 coffee beans with maximum water content of 12%, as well as the total number of physical defects maximum of 11.
Based on the taste test result that arabica Java Ijen-Raung coffee has high acidity level, distinctive quality and aroma with strong aroma intensity, medium thickness, and the most unique and distinguish with other coffee taste that is sweet taste “chocolaty” which is not owned other coffee. This picture shows that Arabica Java Ijen-Raung coffee has a distinctive flavor. The processing practices applied by coffee farmers in the Ijen-Raung area have followed the standard of Good Manufacturing Practices resulting in a taste that is not too bitter and not feel tight (astringent).
The realization of protection Geographical Indication of arabica Java Ijen-Raung coffee products is inseparable from the assistance conducted by the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Reseach Center. The active participation of farmers in training and application of Standard Operating Procedures in Results Processing Unit greatly helpful to consistently produce high quality coffee.
Control and supervision of arabica Java Ijen-Raung coffee products are carried out coherently from the cultivation system to the processing stage by matching the facts on the ground with the book of geographical indication of filing requirements. Control aims to maintain the consistency of coffee flavor generated. If at any time found defective flavors or differences between the facts with the book of requirements then this will threaten the sustainability of certification of geographical indication that has been obtained. Control of arabica Java Ijen-Raung coffee product is done independently by PMPIG Ijen-Raung community. Control is done by taking samples of coffee beans and see the coffee garden randomly in the field. Control on the physical quality of arabica Java Ijen-Raung coffee is done based on “Standar Nasional Indonesia” (SNI) (Indonesian National Standard) number 01-2907-2008, while coffee flavor based on SCAA standard of at least 80.

Geographical description of Ijen-Raung mountains

Ijen-Raung mountains are located at an altitude of more than 900 meters above sea level. Administratively located in the districs of Bondowoso, Situbondo, and Banyuwangi. Land in the mountains Ijen-Raung is a type of Andisol soil that has a high fertility rate and low decomposition. High soil fertility will produce a good coffee taste as well. Arabica Java Ijen-Raung has a tradition of local culture and high quality so known as the origin coffee. The climate in the Ijen-Raung mountains is dry, ie type E (Schmidt & Fergusson classification) with an average rainfall of 1,514 mm per year and the number of wet months and 5-6 months of dry months is characteristic of the Ijen-Raung mountains, and the temperatures range between 18oC-24oC. Ijen-Raung mountains planted many forest plants, among others Suren (Toona sureni), Dadap (Erythrina), Kayumanis (Glycynnhiza glabra), Pinus (Pinus mercusii), and Kayuputih (Eucalyptus globulus).
